WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY 3D MAMMOGRAM? From a patient experience point of view, the 3D mammogram procedure will seem exactly the same as a traditional mammogram. Just as with a digital mammogram, the technologist will position you, compress your breast under a paddle, and take images from different angles. During the 3D mammogram, the x-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple breast images in seconds. Your doctor is then able to view your breast tissue in one-millimeter layers. There is no additional compression required with 3D breast imaging, and it only takes a few seconds longer for each view. The technologist will view the images at a computer workstation to ensure adequate images have been captured for review by a radiologist, who then studies them and reports results to your physician and you. WHAT MAKES A 3D MAMMOGRAM DIFFERENT? While digital mammography is still one of the most advanced technologies available today, it is only a 2-dimensional picture of the breast. Ultrasound imaging uses the principles of sonar. Sound waves bounce off, or echo, off of objects. Ultrasound sends sound waves into the body to echo off organs or other structures. The echo waves are measured, providing information regarding the organ’s or object’s shape, size, and consistency (whether it is a solid mass or fluid-filled). An ultrasound can detect changes in the appearance of tissues and organs and also detect unusual masses, such as cysts or tumors. This test is commonly used to facilitate accurate diagnosis and treatment management for various conditions. We often recognize ultrasound as the imaging that is performed on pregnant women to gain vital information on their fetuses. However, there are several instances in which this method of screening is valuable. WHAT ARE THE KEY FACTORS THAT LEAD SOMEONE TO GETTING AN ULTRASOUND? Doctors employ ultrasound imaging in diagnosing a wide variety of conditions affecting the soft tissues and organs of the body, including the liver, blood vessels, ovaries, uterus, heart, bladder, kidneys, and more. Imaging is typically requested after a patient presents with particular symptoms, such as ongoing abdominal pain and bloating. Patients can expect their doctors to explain their reasoning for recommending ultrasound imaging, and to answer the questions they have about their potential diagnosis. IS THERE REQUIRED CANDIDACY FOR RECEIVING AN ULTRASOUND? The nature of ultrasound screenings make this test appropriate for nearly anyone. Doctors are aware of the limitations of various imaging modalities and make requests accordingly. For example, ultrasound is not particularly good at viewing bones or areas with a lot of air, so a doctor is unlikely to order ultrasound imaging to diagnose a fracture or to view the lungs. HOW IS AN ULTRASOUND PERFORMED? During an ultrasound, the trained technician uses a transducer, a small handpiece, to send sound waves toward a part of the body. A warm gel is applied to the skin to allow the transducer to glide as needed across the surface. The small pulses of sound wave energy are sent silently and painlessly into the body. As these waves bounce off internal organs, tissues, and fluids, echoes are recorded and measured. The image produced by these measurements is instantly displayed on a computer monitor. The technician captures one or more frames from the moving image. Short video loops can also be saved for further observation. Patients undergo ultrasound imaging while lying face-up on an exam table. The body may be positioned for access to one side or the other. The table may also be tilted or turned if necessary. Once the patient is positioned, the sonographer applies the gel to the skin and moves the transducer through it to make secure contact with the body. The transducer is pressed relatively firmly against the body. This should not be painful but can feel slightly uncomfortable. To capture video and images, the sonographer moves the transducer back and forth over the area of interest. ARE THERE ANY RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH ULTRASOUNDS? People often have concerns about the radiation exposure that may occur during diagnostic imaging. Modern technology has significantly reduced the amount of radiation needed to obtain accurate images of various parts of the body. Ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation at all. This screening observes organs and structures using ultrasound waves. It is a frequently-used modality that doctors have relied on for many years.
